Beijing Day 2

We had a new tour guide today, Pan who took us to the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. Forbidden City is much larger than I expected and has amazing art work on the buildings. We learned alot of the history from Pan and I am glad she was along to explain the special meanings of the colors, buildings and statues. It was very bleak inside the Forbidden City, no trees were allowed as the emperor was scared of assassins hiding behind them and trying to kill him. I was amazed at how sheltered life here must have been - most were never allowed to leave the City and go outside.
We then went to the Summer Palace. It was beautiful and we were very lucky with the weather - the smog had lifted and we could see all the temples far off into the distance. We had a good time strolling along the man made lake and seeing all the different buildings and artwork. The leaves were also changing so we had bright, vivid colors.
Then we went to another tea ceremony at a different tea house - one of the oldest in Beijing.
We then headed back to the hotel where we were going to rest a few minutes and going shopping. Unfortunately, Edith and I laid down hoping for a nap and woke up 5 hours later in the middle of the night. So much for getting over the jet lag and getting on China time.
We are being very cautious with what we eat and drink but our throats are beginning to get raw because of the smog. It is also very, very warm in our hotel room. They like to stay warm and have the heat turned up very high, even in the rooms.
Tim and Andrew I miss you very, very much.
